Casa Hogar Sonrisa de Angeles
(Smile of the Angel’s Children’s Home)
Mission: Orphanage for children ages 0-18
Number Served: 25 children receiving full-time care.
Director: Sister Liliana Camacho, Sisters of the Divine Mercy
Location: Colonia Maclavio Rojas, Tijuana, BC, Mexico
SHI Partnership Began: 2010
Project Overview:
This orphanage was founded in 2006 in one of the extremely poor neighborhoods on the outskirts of Tijuana by the Sisters of Divine Mercy. The Sisters provide for all the needs of the children, whose families cannot care for them, including food, shelter, and clothing, education, and faith formation. In order to buy food for the children the Sisters would often sing with their guitars on the side of the road to receive donations from passing cars and trucks.
SHI began supporting this orphanage with groceries delivered every two weeks so the children would receive nutritious meals. In a short time the number of children needing care increased until their small facility was at capacity. SHI provided the orphanage with two portables which have been converted into separate dormitories for boys and girls. SHI also helped the orphanage by providing for the installation of a solar water heating system, and the orphanage does not currently have gas lines, it has recently obtained electrical power. The below picture tells the story of how the children previously had to take baths, in a sink with water that had been heated over an open fire.
Current Needs:
Funding for food and basic overhead expenses, and clothing, toys and hygienic supplies for the children.
